or [one may interpret it as] being alone, so he retreats to join the combatants. It is said: 'tahayyaztu' and 'tahawaztu', meaning: I retreated [joined a group].

Yahya [narrated] from Al-Hasan ibn Dinar, from [the narrator's name is missing in the manuscript] that it reached Umar ibn al-Khattab (fol. 117) that Abu Ubaydah and his companions were killed at the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah. He said: 'May Allah have mercy on Abu Ubaydah; had he retreated to me, I would have been a company for him.'

Yahya [narrated] from al-Rabi' ibn Sabih, from al-Hasan, who said: 'Fleeing from the battlefield is not among the major sins; that [command] only applied on the day of Badr.'
