"And [remember, O Muhammad,] when those who disbelieved plotted against you [to restrain you or kill you or evict you (from Makkah)]..." [The verse]. Al-Kalbi said:
It reached us that a group of the Quraysh gathered in the Dar al-Nadwa plotting against the Prophet of Allah. Iblis entered among them, wearing garments, having claws, and appearing in the guise of an old man. He sat with them, so they said: "What brought you into our gathering without our permission?" He said to them: "I am a man from the people of Najd, and I have come to Makkah. I wanted to hear your speech and gain some goodness from you. I saw your faces to be pleasant and your scent to be good. If you wish, I will sit with you, and if you dislike my company, I will leave."
Some of them said to others: "This is a man from the people of Najd, not from the people of Tihama, so there is no harm to you from him. Speak about the plot against the Prophet of Allah." Al-Bakhtari ibn Hisham—one of the Banu Asad ibn Abd al-Uzza—said: "As for me, I see the best opinion for you is to seize Muhammad, put him in a house, then wall up his door, and make an opening in it through which his food and drink can reach him, then leave him there until he dies." The people said: "What an excellent opinion you have."
Iblis then said: "That is a terrible opinion you have. You intend to take a man who has supporters among you—whom those around you have heard of—and imprison him, feeding and watering him? It is likely that his supporters among you will fight you over him, your community will be corrupted, and blood will be shed." They said: "By Allah, he has spoken the truth." Then Abu al-Aswad—who is Hashim ibn Umayr ibn Rabi'a, one of the Banu Amir ibn Lu'ayy—spoke and said: "As for me, I see that you should carry Muhammad on a camel, then expel him from your land so he may go where he wills, and others will take charge of him." They said: "What an excellent opinion you have." Iblis then said: "That is a terrible opinion you have. You intend to take a man who has corrupted your community and whom your people have followed..."
