{And do not be like those who came forth from their homes boastfully and to be seen by the people} up to His saying: {And Allah is severe in punishment.} Al-Kalbi said: When the polytheists departed from Makkah toward Badr, news reached them while they were at al-Juhfah—before they reached Badr—that their caravan had been saved, so the people intended to turn back. Then Iblis came to them in the form of Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju'shum and said: "O people, do not turn back until you have eradicated them, for you are many and your enemy is few, so your caravan will be safe. I am a protector for you against the Banu Kinanah, such that you will not pass by any tribe of the Banu Kinanah but that they will support you with horses, men, and weapons." So they proceeded as he commanded them, for the destruction Allah intended for them. They and the Muslims met at Badr, and the angels descended with the Muslims in a rank, while Iblis was in the rank of the polytheists in the form of Suraqah ibn Malik. When Iblis saw the angels, he retreated on his heels, and al-Harith ibn Hisham al-Makhzumi took him by the hand and said: "O Suraqah, will you forsake us in this state? {He said: I see what you do not see; I fear Allah, and Allah is severe in punishment.} Al-Harith said to him: "Could this statement not have been made yesterday?" When Iblis saw that the people had advanced toward them, he pushed al-Harith in his chest, and he fell, then Iblis fled and the polytheists were defeated. When they arrived in Makkah, they said: "The people were only defeated because of Suraqah, for he broke the rank." This reached Suraqah, so he came to them in Makkah and said: "It has reached me that you claim I caused the people to be defeated." By the One whom Suraqah swears by, I did not even know of your departure until news of your defeat reached me. They began to remind him: "Did you not come to us on such-and-such day and say such-and-such to us?"
He continued to swear, and when they became Muslims, they knew that it was the Devil.
Al-Kalbi said: He was truthful in his saying: {I see what you do not see.} As for his saying:
