"Fight them; Allah will punish them by your hands"—meaning: with killing— "and disgrace them and give you victory over them and heal the chests of a believing people and remove the rage from their hearts." The believing people whose chests Allah healed were the allies of the Messenger of Allah, the believers of the tribe of Khuza'ah; for on that day—which was the day of the conquest of Mecca—they struck Miqyas ibn Subabah and fifty men of his people. "And Allah turns in forgiveness to whom He wills"—this is not a response to His statement: "Fight them," but rather it is a separate, introductory sentence.
