you wish, you may hunt, and if you wish, you may refrain.
"And do not let the hatred of a people..." meaning: do not let the hatred of a people drive you, "...because they obstructed you from the Sacred Mosque, to transgress."
Al-Kalbi said: He means by "the people": the people of Mecca. He says: Do not transgress against them because they obstructed you from the Sacred Mosque.
Al-Hasan said: This was when they obstructed him on the day of Hudaybiyyah from the Sacred Mosque.
Muhammad said: "Drive you" (yajrimannakum), its literal meaning in the language is: "cause you to earn." It is said: So-and-so is a "jarim" to his family [and earns for his family], meaning: he earns for them. And you say: "Jaramani" such-and-such, meaning: It caused me to earn such-and-such.
And there is another dialect for it: "Ajramani."
