"Had they gone forth with you," he says to the believers, "they would not have increased you except in confusion, and they would have been active among you," meaning: they would have walked among you with slander.
Muhammad said: Al-wad' in the language means speed of movement; it is said: The camel wada'a (moved quickly).
﴿لَو خَرجُوا فِيكُم﴾ يَقُولُهُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿مَا زَادُوكُمْ إِلا خبالا ولأوضعوا خلالكم﴾ أَيْ: مَشُوا بَيْنَكُمْ بِالنَّمِيمَةِ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: الْوَضْعُ فِي اللُّغَةِ: سُرْعَةُ السَّيْرِ؛ يُقَالُ: وَضَعَ الْبَعِيرُ
