"And among them is he who says, 'Give me permission [to stay behind] and do not put me to trial,'" O Muhammad, [meaning: let me] stay with my family, "and do not put me to trial [by letting me see the women of the Romans]." Mujahid’s interpretation: He said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Go on the expedition to Tabuk, that you might gain the daughters of al-Asfar, the women of the Romans." The hypocrites said: "Give us permission and do not put us to trial with the women." Allah, the Glorified, said: "Surely [they have already fallen into trial]."
