"[It] will not be accepted from you."
Muhammad said: Regarding His saying, "Say: 'Spend'", some grammarians have remarked concerning it: This is a form of command, but its meaning is that of a conditional and informative statement. That is, it means: If you spend, whether willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you. He said: An example of this meaning in poetry is the statement of Kuthayyir:
(Treat us badly or well, for you are neither blamed by us nor hated if you should hate.)
He did not command her to treat him badly, but rather informed her that whether she treated him badly or well, he remains bound by his commitment to her.
﴿لن يتَقَبَّل مِنْكُم﴾.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: قَوْلُهُ: ﴿قُلْ أَنْفِقُوا﴾ قَالَ بَعْضُ النَّحْوِيِّينَ فِيهِ: هَذَا لَفْظُ أَمْرٍ، وَمَعْنَاهُ مَعْنَى الشَّرْطِ وَالْخَبَرِ؛ أَيْ: يَقُولُ: إِنْ أَنْفَقْتُمْ طَائِعِينَ أَوْ مُكْرَهِينَ، لَنْ يُتَقَبَّلَ مِنْكُمْ. قَالَ: وَمِثْلُ هَذَا الْمَعْنَى مِنَ الشِّعْرِ قَوْلُ كُثَيْرٍ:
(أَسِيئِي بِنَا أَوْ أَحْسِنِي لَا ملومةٌ … لَدَيْنَا وَلا مقليةٌ إِنْ تَقَلَّتِ)
فَلَمْ يَأْمُرْهَا بِالإِسَاءَةِ، لَكِنْ أَعْلَمَهَا أَنَّهَا إِنْ أَسَاءَتْ أَوْ أَحْسَنَتْ فَهُوَ على عهدها.
