"And they thought that there would be no trial." The interpretation of al-Hasan is: And they thought that they would not be tested in the religion by being commanded to struggle for it, and that obedience to Muhammad would not be imposed upon them.
"Then they became blind and deaf," meaning: to the guidance. "Then Allah turned to them [in forgiveness]," meaning: He provided a path of repentance for them, and He saved them through Muhammad. "Then many of them became blind and deaf," meaning: those of them who disbelieved.

﴿وَحَسبُوا أَلا تكون فتْنَة﴾ تَفْسِيرُ الْحَسَنِ: وَحَسِبُوا أَلَّا يُبْتَلُوا فِي الدِّينِ يُجَاهِدُونَ فِيهِ، وَتُفْرَضُ عَلَيْهِمُ الطَّاعَةُ بِمُحَمَّدٍ.
﴿فَعَمُوا وَصَمُّوا﴾ يَعْنِي: عَنِ الْهُدَى ﴿ثُمَّ تَابَ الله عَلَيْهِم﴾ أَيْ: جَعَلَ لَهُمْ مَتَابًا، فَاسْتَنْقَذَهُمْ بِمُحَمَّدٍ ﴿ثُمَّ عَمُوا وَصَمُّوا كَثِيرٌ مِنْهُم﴾ يَعْنِي: من كفر مِنْهُم.
