"And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and enmity." Al-'adw means transgression (al-'udwan).
Muhammad said: His saying: "Pharaoh pursued them," meaning: he overtook them. It is said: 'Atba'tu (I followed) the people [meaning I caught up with them].
﴿وَجَاوَزْنَا بِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ الْبَحْرَ فَأَتْبَعَهُمْ فِرْعَوْن وَجُنُوده بغيا وعدوا﴾ العَدْوُ: العُدْوَانُ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: قَوْلُهُ: ﴿فأتبعهم فِرْعَوْن﴾ أَيْ: لَحِقَهُمْ؛ يُقَالُ: أَتْبَعْتُ الْقَوْمَ:
