Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Aziz by Ibn Abi Zamanin
Volume 2 · Page 88644

Translation · EN

"And the water subsided," meaning: it decreased.

Muhammad said: It is said: The water 'ghāḍa' (receded) 'yaghīḍu' when it disappears into the earth.

Some recited 'ghīḍa al-māʾu' with the ishmām (blending) of the damma into the ghayn. Whoever read it this way intended the original [form] 'fuʿila' (passive voice). Whoever pronounced it with kasra did so for the sake of the yāʾ that is after the faʾ of the verb.

"And the matter was concluded," meaning: it was finished; namely, the destruction of the people of Noah.

"And it [the ark] came to rest upon al-Jūdī," which is a mountain in the Jazīrah (Mesopotamia).

Qatāda said:

It has reached me that when the ark was about to come to a stop, the mountains stretched themselves out for it, each mountain wanting it to rest upon it. But al-Jūdī humbled itself, so it [the ark] came until it rested upon it. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, caused it to remain as a lesson and a sign until the early generations of this Ummah looked upon it.
