"They said, 'O Shu'ayb, does your prayer command you that we should leave what our fathers worship?'" They mean: their idols.
Al-Hasan said: Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, did not send a prophet without obligating upon him prayer and Zakat.
Muhammad [Ibn Abi Zamanin] said: The meaning is: does your religion command you? And this is the meaning of what Al-Hasan went with.
"Or that we should do with our wealth what we wish?" meaning: or that we should leave doing [as we wish] with our wealth.
"Indeed, you are the forbearing, the rightly guided." This means: you are not the forbearing, the rightly guided [said sarcastically].
﴿قَالُوا يَا شُعَيْبُ أَصَلاتُكَ تَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ نَتْرُكَ مَا يَعْبُدُ آبَاؤُنَا﴾ يَعْنُونَ: أَوْثَانَهُمْ.
قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: لمْ يَبْعَثِ اللَّهُ ﷿ نَبِيًّا إِلا فَرَضَ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلاةَ وَالزَّكَاةَ.
قَالَ محمدٌ: الْمَعْنَى: أَدِينُكَ يَأْمُرُكَ؛ وَهُوَ مَعْنَى مَا ذَهَبَ إِلَيْهِ الْحَسَنُ.
﴿أَوْ أَنْ نَفْعَلَ فِي أَمْوَالنَا مَا نشَاء﴾ أَيْ: أَوْ أَنْ نَتْرُكَ أَنْ نَفْعَلَ.
﴿إِنَّكَ لَأَنْتَ الْحَلِيمُ الرَّشِيدُ﴾ أَيْ: أَنَّكَ لَسْتَ بِالْحَلِيمِ الرَّشِيدِ.
