[He] said, 'O my people, is my family more honored by you than Allah? And you have cast Him behind your backs [in neglect].' Qatada said: He says: You have honored your people and disregarded your Lord.
Yahya said: I believe he means: You have placed Him behind your backs.
Muhammad said: It is said: 'I cast behind (dhahartu bi) the need of so-and-so' when I discard it and do not care about it. From this is the saying of al-Farazdaq:
﴿قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ أَرَهْطِي أَعَزُّ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَاتَّخَذْتُمُوهُ، وَرَاءَكُمْ ظهرياًّ﴾ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: يَقُولُ: أَعْزَزْتُمْ قَوْمَكُمْ، وَأَظْهَرْتُمْ بِرَبِّكُمْ
قَالَ يحيى: أَرَاهُ يَعْنِي: جَعَلْتُمُوهُ مِنْكُمْ بِظَهْرٍ.
قَالَ محمدٌ: يُقَالُ: ظَهْرَتُ بِحَاجَةِ فلانٍ؛ إِذَا نَبَذْتُهَا وَلَمْ تَعْبَأْ بِهَا، وَمِنْهُ قَوْلُ الْفَرَزْدَقِ:
