{This is nothing but the habits of the ancients}, he says: their habits are lying. And it is read: {This is nothing but the creation of the ancients}, meaning: such was the creation before us, and we are like them; they lived as long as they lived, then they died, and there is no resurrection for them, nor any reckoning.

﴿إِنْ هَذَا إِلا خُلُقُ الأَوَّلِينَ﴾ يَقُولُ: خُلُقُهُمُ الْكَذِبُ، وَتُقْرَأُ: إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا (خَلْقُ الْأَوَّلِينَ) أَيْ: هَكَذَا كَانَ الْخَلْقُ قَبْلَنَا وَنَحْنُ مِثْلُهُمْ، عَاشُوا مَا عَاشُوا، ثُمَّ مَاتُوا وَلَا بَعْثٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا حِسَاب.
