They sought refuge beneath it, seeking relief; but God made it a punishment for them. He turned that cloud into fire, which blazed upon them, and destroyed them by that means.

فَلَجَئُوا تَحْتَهَا يَلْتَمِسُونَ الرَّوْحَ؛ فَجَعَلَهَا اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ عَذَابًا، جَعَلَ تِلْكَ السَّحَابَةُ نَارًا، فَاضْطَرَمَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَأَهْلَكَهُمُ بذلك.
