"And lower your wing to those who follow you among the believers," just as in His saying: "So by mercy from Allah, you were lenient with them."
Muhammad said: Among the speech of the Arabs is [the expression] "lower your wing"; it means: make your wing soft [i.e., be gentle/humble].
﴿وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْمُؤمنِينَ﴾ كَقَوْلِهِ: ﴿فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ لنت لَهُم﴾.
قَالَ مُحَمَّد: من كَلَام الْعَرَب: اخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ؛ يَعْنِي: أَلِنْ جَنَاحَكَ.
