"And whoever Allah sends astray, you will never find for them protectors besides Him," meaning: who could prevent them from the punishment of Allah. "And We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection," al-Suddi said: Meaning, We will drive them after the reckoning toward the Fire, "on their faces, blind, mute, and deaf." As for "blind" (umyan), they are blind in the Fire when they enter it, for they shall not see anything within it, and it is black and dark, its flames giving no light. As for "mute" (bukman), they are dumb; their speech will be cut off when He says, "Depart into it and do not speak to Me." As for "deaf" (summan), the heaving and gasping [of the Fire] will take away their hearing, so they will not hear anything of it. He said in another verse:
﴿وَمَنْ يُضْلِلْ فَلَنْ تَجِدَ لَهُمْ أَوْلِيَاء من دونه﴾ أَيْ: يَمْنَعُونَهُمْ مِنْ عَذَابِ اللَّهِ. ﴿ونحشرهم يَوْم الْقِيَامَة﴾ قَالَ السُّدِّيُّ: يَعْنِي: نَسُوقَهُمْ بَعْدَ الْحِسَابِ إِلَى النَّارِ ﴿عَلَى وُجُوهِهِمْ عميا وبكما وصما﴾ أما (عميا) فَعَمُوا فِي النَّارِ حِينَ دَخَلُوهَا فَلَمْ يُبْصِرُوا فِيهَا شَيْئًا وَهِيَ سَوْدَاءُ مُظْلِمَةٌ لَا يُضِيءُ لَهَبُهَا، و (بكما): خُرْسًا؛ انْقَطَعَ كَلَامُهُمْ حِينَ قَالَ: ﴿اخْسَئُوا فِيهَا وَلَا تكَلمُون﴾ و (صمًّا): أَذْهَبَ الزَّفِيرُ وَالشَّهِيقُ بِسَمْعِهِمْ؛ فَلَا يسمعُونَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، وَقَالَ فِي آيَةٍ أُخْرَى:
