"And the word shall be fulfilled upon them," meaning: the anger shall be justly due "for what they did wrong," [meaning] they committed shirk (polytheism).
Surah an-Naml (verse 87, verse 88).
﴿وَوَقع القَوْل عَلَيْهِم﴾ أَيْ: حَقَّ الْغَضَبُ ﴿بِمَا ظَلَمُوا﴾ أشركوا.
