"Is he whom We have promised a good promise," meaning Paradise, "and he will meet it, like one whom We have provided with the enjoyment of the life of this world, then he is on the Day of Resurrection among those brought forward [for punishment]?" meaning: that the two are not equal. It is said: This was revealed regarding the Prophet, peace be upon him, and regarding Abu Jahl ibn Hisham.
﴿أَفَمَن وعدناه وَعدا حسنا﴾ يَعْنِي الْجَنَّةَ ﴿فَهُوَ لاقِيهِ [كَمَنْ مَتَّعْنَاهُ مَتَاعَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ثُمَّ هُوَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنَ الْمُحْضَرِينَ]﴾ أَيْ: أَنَّهُمَا لَا يَسْتَوِيَانِ. يُقَالُ: نزلت فِي النَّبِي عليه السلام وَفِي أَبِي جَهْلِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ
