the punishment from above them and from beneath their feet," which is like His saying: "They shall have a bed of Hell, and over them coverings (of Hell-fire)." And He says: "Taste what you used to do," meaning: the recompense for what you used to do in the world.
الْعَذَابُ مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ وَمِنْ تَحْتِ أَرجُلهم﴾ كَقَوْلِهِ: ﴿لَهُمْ مِنْ جَهَنَّمَ مِهَادٌ وَمن فَوْقهم غواش﴾ ﴿﴾ (وَيَقُولُ ذُوقُوا مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ﴾ أَيْ: ثَوَابَ مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ فِي الدُّنْيَا
