"They have no knowledge thereof," that Allah has a child, "nor had their fathers" who were in polytheism. "Grievous is the word that comes out of their mouths." The word (kalimatan) is in the accusative case (nasb), and al-Hasan used to recite it (kalimatun) in the nominative case (raf'); its explanation is: Grievous is that word as a word, in that they said that Allah has a child.
﴿مَا لَهُمْ بِهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ﴾ أَنَّ لِلَّهِ وَلَدًا ﴿وَلا لآبَائِهِمْ﴾ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا فِي الشِّرْكِ ﴿كَبُرَتْ كلمة تخرج من أَفْوَاههم﴾ (كلمة) بِالنَّصْبِ، وَكَانَ الْحَسَنُ يَقْرَؤُهَا (كَلِمَةٌ) بِالرَّفْعِ؛ وَتَفْسِيرُهَا: كَبُرَتْ تِلْكَ الْكَلِمَةُ كَلِمَةً أَنْ قَالُوا أَنَّ لِلَّهِ ولدا.
