{And indeed, We will make what is upon it}—meaning what is upon the earth—{a barren dust}, concerning which Qatada said: The "juruz" (barren land) is that which contains neither trees nor vegetation.
Muhammad says: It is said: an "ard juruz" (barren land), and plural is "arazun ajraz". As for "as-sa'id" (the surface/dust) in the lexicon of the Arabs: it is the level ground.
Surah al-Kahf, from (verse 9 to verse 16).
﴿وَإِنَّا لجاعلون مَا عَلَيْهَا﴾ مَا عَلَى الْأَرْضِ ﴿صَعِيدًا جُرُزًا﴾ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: الْجُرُزُ: الَّتِي لَيْسَ فِيهَا شَجَرٌ وَلَا نَبَاتٌ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّد: يُقَال: أَرض جرز، وأراضون أَجْرَازٌ، وَالصَّعِيدُ عِنْدَ الْعَرَبِ: الْمُسْتَوِي.
