Translation · EN

(And do not turn your cheek away from people) [i.e.,] do not turn your face away from them in arrogance.

Muhammad said: As for one who reads it as (tuṣa‘‘ir) [with a shaddah], it is for the purpose of intensification. The root of the word is derived from their saying: The camel was afflicted with sa‘ar, which is a disease that causes it to twist its neck.

﴿وَلَا تصاعر خدك للنَّاس﴾ لَا تُعْرِضْ بِوَجْهِكَ عَنْهُمُ اسْتِكْبَارًا.

قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: وَمَنْ قَرَأَ (تُصَعِّرْ) فَعَلَى وَجْهِ الْمُبَالَغَةِ، وَأَصْلُ الْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمْ: أَصَابَ الْبَعِيرَ صَعْرٌ؛ إِذْ أَصَابَهُ دَاءٌ فَلَوَى مِنْهُ عُنُقَهُ.
