[And when waves cover them like canopies]—meaning like mountains. [And among them are those who are moderate]—this refers to the believer. As for the disbeliever, he returns to his disbelief. [And none rejects Our signs except everyone treacherous]—meaning treacherous—[ungrateful]. It is said: He was sincere to Him while at sea due to the fear of drowning, then he acted treacherously.
Surah Luqman (from verse 33 to verse 34).
﴿وَإِذا غشيهم موج كالظلل﴾ كالجبال. ﴿فَمنهمْ مقتصد﴾ هَذَا الْمُؤْمِنُ، وَأَمَّا الْكَافِرُ فَعَادَ فِي كُفْرِهِ ﴿وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِآيَاتِنَا إِلَّا كل ختار﴾ أَي: غدار ﴿كفور﴾ يَقُولُ: أَخْلَصَ لَهُ فِي الْبَحْرِ لِلْمَخَافَةِ مِنَ الْغَرَقِ، ثُمَّ غَدَرَ.
