Aisha [narrated] that a woman said to her, 'O mother!' She replied, 'I am not your mother; I am only the mother of your men.'

'And those of blood relationships are closer to each other in the Book of Allah than the [other] believers and the emigrants.' Qatada's interpretation is: [This] had been revealed before this verse in Surah al-Anfal: 'And those who believed but did not emigrate - you have no duty of guardianship toward them until they emigrate.' Thus, the Muslims used to inherit by virtue of emigration, and the Bedouin Muslim would not inherit anything from his Muslim relative who had emigrated. Then, that was abrogated in this Surah, and inheritances were determined by [the common bond of] faith.

'Except that you do to your allies'—meaning: from the people of polytheism—'a kindness'—meaning: by kindness: a bequest. Then He returned to His statement: 'And those of blood relationships are closer to each other in the Book of Allah,' and said: 'That was in the Book inscribed'—meaning: written: A disbeliever shall not inherit from a Muslim, for the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: 'A Muslim does not inherit from a disbeliever.'
