"And if they had been entered upon from all its sides," he says: If Abu Sufyan and those with him had entered upon them from its various regions, "and then they had been asked for sedition," meaning: polytheism, "they would have committed it," meaning: they would have brought it. It is also recited as (la-ataw-ha) with the madd (elongation), the meaning being: they would have given it.
وَلَوْ دُخِلَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ أَقْطَارِهَا﴾ يَقُولُ: لَوْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ مِنْ نَوَاحِيهَا ﴿ثمَّ سئلوا الْفِتْنَة﴾ يَعْنِي: الشّرك ﴿لآتوها﴾ لَجَاءُوهَا وَتُقْرَأُ: (لَآتَوْهَا) بِالْمَدِّ، الْمَعْنَى: لأعطوها.
