And he transferred its vowel to the qaf, so it became 'wa-qarna'.
Yahya said: It is also recited as 'wa-qirna' with a kasra on the qaf, and it is derived from al-waqar (dignity/gravity).
Muhammad said: [One says] 'waqara' in his house, meaning he remained/settled therein (yaqirru wuquuran). 'And do not display yourselves as [was the] display of the former ignorance' (33:33), meaning: before you. In the tafsir of al-Hasan, it does not mean that there was a [specific] ignorance before it, [it is used] like His saying: 'the former 'Ad' (53:50).
Some of them say: It means the Age of Ignorance in which Abraham was born, before the Age of Ignorance in which Muhammad was born. 'And establish the prayer' (33:33), meaning: the five daily prayers. 'And give the zakat' (33:33), meaning: the obligatory [zakat]. 'And obey Allah and His Messenger' (33:33) in what He has commanded you. 'Allah only intends to remove from you the rijs (impurity/abomination)' (33:33), meaning: the Devil.
Some of them said: Rijs is sin.
Muhammad said: Rijs in the language is everything that is denounced and considered repugnant, whether it be food, an action, or an act of lewdness. 'Ahl al-bayt' (the people of the house) is in the accusative case (mansub) based on two aspects: the meaning of 'I mean the people of the house' or as a vocative. 'And to purify you [with] a complete purification' (33:33).
Yahya [narrated] from Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq, from Abu Dawud, from Abu al-Hamra', who said:
