Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Aziz by Ibn Abi Zamanin
Volume 3 · Page 149837

Translation · EN

"And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, 'Keep your wife and fear Allah'"—and His saying: 'and you bestowed favor'—meaning: Zayd.

Allah said to the Prophet: "'And you conceal within yourself that which Allah is to disclose'"—that is: manifest—"'and you fear the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him'"—that is: you fear the criticism of the people. "'So when Zayd had no longer any need for her'"—al-watar means: the need—"'We gave her to you in marriage, so that there will not be any discomfort upon the believers concerning the wives of their adopted sons.'" The polytheists said to the Prophet: "O Muhammad, you claim that the wife of the son is not lawful for the father, yet you have married the wife of your son Zayd!" So Allah said: "'So that there will not be any discomfort upon the believers'"—to the end of the verse. Al-Kalbi said: The Messenger of Allah came to visit Zayd and saw her standing, and she impressed him, so the Messenger of Allah said: "Exalted is Allah, the Turner of hearts."
