His saying: "There is not to be upon the Prophet any discomfort in that which Allah has ordained for him," meaning: He has made it lawful. "[This is] the established way of Allah with those who passed on before"—meaning that there is no discomfort upon the prophets in what Allah has made lawful for them. He had made one hundred wives lawful for David, and three hundred wives and seven hundred concubines lawful for Solomon.
Muhammad said: The accusative case (nasb) of "sunnata" (way) is due to its being an infinitive (masdar); the meaning is: Allah has established a way (sanna Allahu sunnatan).
Surat al-Ahzab from (verse 40 to verse 43).
قَوْلُهُ: ﴿مَا كَانَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ مِنْ حَرَجٍ فِيمَا فَرَضَ اللَّهُ لَهُ﴾ يَعْنِي: أَحَلَّ ﴿سُنَّةَ اللَّهِ فِي الَّذين خلوا من قبل﴾ أَيْ: أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ عَلَى الْأَنْبِيَاءِ حَرَجٌ فِيمَا أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ، وَقَدْ أَحَلَّ لِدَاوُدَ مِائَةَ امْرَأَةٍ، ولسليمان ثَلَاثمِائَة إمرأة وَسَبْعمائة سُرِّيَةٍ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: نَصْبُ (سُنَّةَ) عَلَى الْمَصْدَرِ؛ الْمَعْنَى: سَنَّ اللَّهُ سنة.
