"O Prophet, indeed We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their due compensation [dowries]," meaning their marriage gifts. "And those your right hand possesses from what Allah has returned to you [of captives] and a believing woman if she gives herself to the Prophet [and] the Prophet wishes to marry her, [this is] only for you, excluding the [other] believers." This is addressed to the Prophet, peace be upon him, "excluding the believers." There is no marriage by gift without a dowry except for the Prophet, according to the interpretation of al-Hasan; for the Prophet, peace be upon him, voluntarily gave that woman who offered herself a dowry.
The reading of the majority is (an wahabat), with the letter alif opened (fatḥah). Its interpretation according to this reading is that it referred to a single woman. As for the one who recites it with the alif broken (kasrah, i.e., inna), it is interpreted in the sense of the future.
