"And those who offend the believing men and the believing women for something they did not commit"—meaning: did not perpetrate; these are the hypocrites—"have certainly borne a slander" (falsehood) "and a manifest sin" (an evident one).
Yahya narrated from al-Nadr ibn Bilal, from Aban ibn Abi Ayyash, from Anas ibn Malik: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out one day and called out with a voice that could be heard by young women in their secluded chambers, saying: "O group of those who have embraced Islam with their tongues but not with their hearts, do not offend the believers, do not backbite them, and do not pursue their faults. For whoever pursues the fault of his Muslim brother, Allah will pursue his fault; and whoever Allah pursues his fault, He will disgrace him within his own home."
