"And present to them an example of two men: We granted to one of them two gardens of grapevines and surrounded them with palm trees." Muhammad said: He means: We caused the palm trees to enclose them. And His statement: "an example of two men" (mathalan rajulayn), he rendered them in the accusative (nasb) as the object; meaning: present for them two men as an example.
﴿وَاضْرِبْ لَهُمْ مَثَلا رَجُلَيْنِ جَعَلْنَا لأَحَدِهِمَا جَنَّتَيْنِ مِنْ أَعْنَابٍ وَحَفَفْنَاهُمَا بِنَخْل﴾ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: يَقُولُ: جَعَلْنَا النَّخْلَ مُطْبِقًا بِهِمَا. وَقَوْلُهُ: ﴿مَثَلا رَجُلَيْنِ﴾ نَصَبَهُمَا عَلَى مَعْنَى الْمَفْعُولِ؛ أَيْ: اضْرِب لَهُم رجلَيْنِ مثلا.
