Yahya said: It was mentioned to us that when Moses crossed the sea and God saved him from the people of Pharaoh, he gathered the Children of Israel and addressed them, saying: "You are today the best of the people of the earth and the most knowledgeable among them. God has destroyed your enemy, brought you across the sea, and revealed the Torah to you." It was said to him: "There is a man here who is more knowledgeable than you." So he set out with his attendant, Joshua, seeking him, and they took with them a salted fish in a basket. They were told: "When you forget something of what you have with you, you will meet a knowledgeable man who is called Khadir."
Yahya said: Some of them mentioned that when Moses and his attendant reached the rock on the seashore, they spent the night there. There was a water spring by it, and they had eaten half of the fish and half remained. His attendant brought the basket near the spring, and the water touched the fish, so it came back to life, tunneled through, and entered the sea. Moses and his attendant proceeded on.
