(every seaworthy ship). Muhammad said: "Wara'a" (behind) can mean: after, and this is [the meaning of] His saying: "And beyond that is a harsh punishment," and from this is the saying of al-Nabigha:
(I swore, so I left no doubt for your soul ... and there is no escape for a person after/beyond God)
Meaning: there is no path for a person after the paths of God.
It can also mean: in front of; and from this is the saying of the speaker:
(Do you threaten me while [you are] behind/in front of the Banu Riyah? ... You lied, your hands shall surely fall short of me)
Meaning: in front of the Banu Riyah.
(كُلَّ سَفِينَةٍ صَالِحَةٍ). قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: يَكُونُ " وَرَاءَ " بِمَعْنَى: بَعْدَ، وَهُوَ قَوْلُهُ ﴿وَمِنْ وَرَائِهِ عَذَابٌ غَلِيظٌ﴾ وَمِنْهُ قَوْلُ النَّابِغَةِ:
(حَلَفْتُ فَلَمْ أَتْرُكْ لِنَفْسِكَ رِيبَةً … وَلَيْسَ وَرَاءَ اللَّهِ لِلْمَرْءِ مَذْهَبُ)
أَيْ: لَيْسَ بَعْدَ مَذَاهِبَ اللَّهِ لِلْمَرْءِ مَذْهَبٌ.
وَتَكُونُ بِمَعْنَى: أَمَامَ؛ وَمِنْ هَذَا قَوْلُ الْقَائِلِ:
(أَتُوعِدُنِي وَرَاءَ بَنِي رِيَاحٍ … كَذَبْتَ لَتَقْصِرَنَّ يَدَاكَ عَنِّي)
يُرِيد أَمَام بني ريَاح.
