Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Aziz by Ibn Abi Zamanin
Volume 3 · Page 23486

Translation · EN

"Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring." It is also read as (ḥāmiyah - hot). Ibn Abī Mulaykah said: Ibn ʿAbbās and ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ differed; Ibn ʿAbbās said: (ḥamiʾah - muddy), and ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ said: (ḥāmiyah - hot). They placed Kaʿb al-Aḥbār between them [as an arbiter], and Kaʿb said: We find it in the Torah: it sets in water and mud, just as Ibn ʿAbbās said.

Yahyā said: And whoever reads it as (ḥāmiyah - hot) means: that is, containing mud (ḥamʾah). You say: The well became muddy (ḥamiʾat), meaning it is ḥamiʾah when it develops mud within it, becoming turbid and its odor changing.

(Folio 199) "And he found near it a people. We said, 'O Dhū al-Qarnayn, either you punish'"—meaning killing—"'or you take among them a good way'"—meaning pardoning. In the Tafsīr of al-Suddī, he said: They deferred judgment to him, so he judged between them.
