"Say: I am only a human being like you, to whom it has been revealed that your God is One God." This is because the polytheists said to him: "You are nothing but a human being like us." So Allah said: "Say: I am only a human being like you, to whom it has been revealed that your God is One God. So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord," meaning: fears the Resurrection, "let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord," meaning: let him make his deed sincere for Him.
Yahya: On the authority of al-Furat ibn Salman, from Abd al-Karim al-Jazari, from Tawus, that a man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a man who stands in positions [of public visibility] desiring the Countenance of Allah, yet I like for my place to be seen!" The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, did not reply to him with anything, then this verse was revealed: "So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord" to the end of it.
﴿قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ يُوحَى إِلَيَّ أَنَّمَا إِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِد﴾ وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ الْمُشْرِكِينَ قَالُوا لَهُ: مَا أَنْتَ إِلَّا بَشْرٌ مِثْلُنَا. فَقَالَ اللَّهُ: ﴿قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ يُوحَى إِلَيَّ أَنَّمَا إِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ فَمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو لِقَاء ربه﴾ أَيْ: يَخَافُ الْبَعْثَ ﴿فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلا صَالِحًا وَلا يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِ أحدا﴾ أَيْ: يُخْلِصُ لَهُ الْعَمَلَ.
يَحْيَى: عَنِ الْفُرَاتِ بْنِ سَلْمَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ الْجَزَرِيِّ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ، أَن رجلا قَالَ: " يَا رَسُول اللَّهِ، إِنِّي رَجُلٌ أَقِفُ الْمَوَاقِفَ أُرِيدُ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ، وَأُحِبُّ أَنْ يُرَى مَكَانِي! فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ رَسُول الله عليه السلام شَيْئًا، فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ: ﴿فَمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو لِقَاء ربه﴾ إِلَى آخِرِهَا ".
