"And We will drive the criminals"—meaning the polytheists—"to Hell, thirsty" (wirdan), meaning thirsty.
Muhammad said: "Wirdan" in its linguistic origin refers to a group approaching water.
﴿ونسوق الْمُجْرمين﴾ يَعْنِي: الْمُشْرِكِينَ ﴿إِلَى جَهَنَّمَ وِرْدًا﴾ أَيْ: عِطَاشًا.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: ﴿وِرْدًا﴾ أَصْلُهُ فِي اللُّغَةِ: الْجَمَاعَةُ يَرِدُونَ المَاء.
