{And how many a generation We destroyed before them} before your people, O Muhammad, {do you perceive any of them} meaning: do you see, {or hear from them a sound?} meaning: a voice? That is: you neither see any of them, nor do you hear any sound from them.
Muhammad [Ibn Abi Zamanin] said: "Rikz" in the language is the faint sound.
﴿وَكم أهلكنا قبلهم﴾ قَبْلَ قَوْمِكَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ ﴿مِنْ قَرْنٍ هَلْ تُحِسُّ مِنْهُمْ مِنْ أحد﴾ أَيْ: هَلْ تَرَى ﴿أَوْ تَسْمَعُ لَهُم ركزا﴾ يَعْنِي: صَوْتًا؟ أَيْ: إِنَّكَ لَا تَرَى مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا، وَلَا تَسْمَعُ لَهُمْ صَوْتًا.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: الرِّكْزُ فِي اللُّغَةِ: الصَّوْتُ الْخَفِيُّ.
