"So he made them into fragments," meaning: pieces. He cut off their hands and their feet, gouged out their eyes, and carved their faces. "Except for a great one among them," referring to the idols; meaning: the greatest of them in their own estimation. Then he fastened the axe into the [hand] of that greatest idol; he schemed against them with that, "that they might turn to it," meaning: that they might perceive it and thus believe.
﴿فجعلهم جذاذا﴾ أَيْ: قِطَعًا؛ قَطَعَ أَيْدِيَهَا وَأَرْجُلَهَا، وَفَقَأَ أَعْيُنَهَا، وَنَجَرَ وُجُوْهَهَا ﴿إِلا كَبِيرا لَهُم﴾ لِلْآلِهَةِ؛ يَعْنِي: أَعْظَمَهَا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ، ثُمَّ أَوْثَقَ الْفَأْسَ فِي [يَدِ] كَبِيرِ تِلْكَ الْأَصْنَامِ؛ كَادَهُمْ بِذَلِكَ ﴿لَعَلَّهُم إِلَيْهِ يرجعُونَ﴾ أَي: يبصرون فيؤمنون.
