"And those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt about it" [meaning: in skepticism; that is: about the Qur'an] "until the Hour comes to them suddenly" [meaning: those upon whom the Hour will be established, those who follow] (fol. 224) the religion of Abu Jahl and [his companions] "or there comes to them the punishment of a barren day" meaning: the punishment of the Day of Badr.
Muhammad said: [The root of 'al-'uqm' (barrenness)] is in childbirth; it is said: a barren woman, and a barren man, if one does not conceive children. And a barren wind is one that does not bring [clouds to cause rain].
Surah al-Hajj, from (verse 57 to verse 59).
﴿وَلا يَزَالُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فِي مرية مِنْهُ﴾ [أَيْ: شَكٍّ؛ يَعْنِي: مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ] ﴿حَتَّى تأتيهم السَّاعَة بَغْتَة﴾ [يَعْنِي الَّذِينَ تَقُومُ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّاعَةُ، الدائنين] (ل ٢٢٤) بدين أبي جهل و [أَصْحَابه] ﴿أَوْ يَأْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمٍ عَقِيمٍ﴾ أَيْ: عَذَابُ يَوْمِ بَدْرٍ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: [أَصْلُ الْعُقْمِ] فِي الْوِلَادَةِ؛ يُقَالُ: امْرَأَةٌ عَقِيمٌ، وَرَجُلٌ عَقِيمٌ إِذَا كَانَ لَا يُولَدُ لَهُ، وَرِيحٌ عَقِيمٌ الَّتِي لَا تَأْتِي [بسحاب فتمطر].
