"And indeed, We have created above you seven layers [tarā'iq]." Mujahid's interpretation: Meaning seven heavens, some above others.
Muhammad said: "Tarā'iq" is the plural of "ṭarīqah." It is said: "ṭāraqtu al-shay'" (I layered the thing) when I place some of it above the rest; from this is their saying: "Rīshun ṭarrāq" (layered feathers). "And We were never unaware of [Our] creation," meaning: from sending down upon them that which gives them life and that which rectifies their affairs from this rain, according to the interpretation of al-Hasan.
