"Then they said: 'Shall we believe in two human beings like ourselves, while their people are our slaves?'" They had enslaved the Children of Israel and imposed the jizyah upon them; it does not mean that they worshiped us.
﴿فَقَالُوا أَنُؤْمِنُ لِبَشَرَيْنِ مِثْلِنَا وَقَوْمُهُمَا لنا عَابِدُونَ﴾ وَكَانُوا قَدِ اسْتَعْبَدُوا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ، وَوَضَعُوا عَلَيْهِمُ الْجِزْيَةَ، وَلَيْسَ يَعْنِي: أَنهم يعبدوننا.
