"And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign"—that is, a lesson, created without a father. "And We sheltered them in a high ground (rabwah)." Qatadah said: "The rabwah here is Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem)." Yahya said: "It was mentioned to us that Ka'b used to say: 'It is the closest part of the earth to the heaven by eighteen miles.'"
Muhammad said: "Everything that rises and increases has grown (rabba)." "With stability (qarar)"—Ibn al-Musayyib said: "Meaning, with gardens." "And a spring (ma'in)"—'Ikrimah said: "The ma'in is that which is manifest (apparent)."
Muhammad said: "According to this interpretation, it is a derivative (maf'ul) from the spring ('ayn), and its original form is ma'yun."
