"And those who give what they give" (Quran 23:60) — read with a long vowel — "while their hearts are fearful" (Quran 23:60), meaning: afraid, "that they are to their Lord returning" (Quran 23:60). Al-Hasan's interpretation is: They used to perform whatever righteous deeds they performed, yet they feared that those deeds would not save them from the punishment of their Lord.
Muhammad said: And the meaning of "that they are to their Lord returning" is: that they are certain that they are returning to their Lord.
﴿وَالَّذين يُؤْتونَ مَا آتوا﴾ ممدودة ﴿وَقُلُوبهمْ وَجلة﴾ أَيْ: خَائِفَةٌ ﴿أَنَّهُمْ إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُون﴾ تَفْسِيرُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ: كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ أَعْمَالِ الْبِرِّ، وَيَخَافُونَ أَلَا يُنْجِيَهُمْ ذَلِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِمْ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: وَمَعْنَى أَنَّهُمْ إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُونَ: أَنَّهُمْ يُوقِنُونَ بِأَنَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ.
