Then He will reply to them, "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me!" meaning: be belittled; this is according to the tafsir (interpretation) of al-Hasan. He said: By Allah, the people did not speak a single word after that, and there was nothing but wailing and moaning.
Muhammad said: The meaning of "ikhsa'u" (remain despised) in the language is: keep away. It is said: I drove the dog away (khasa'tu al-kalb) when I rebuke it so that it moves away.
ثُمَّ يَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِمْ ﴿اخْسَئُوا فِيهَا وَلَا تكَلمُون﴾ أَيْ: اصْغَرُوا؛ فِي تَفْسِيرِ الْحَسَنِ. قَالَ: فَوَاللَّهِ مَا تَكَلَّمَ الْقَوْمُ بَعْدَهَا بِكَلِمَةٍ، وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا الزَّفِيرُ وَالشَّهِيقُ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: مَعْنَى ﴿اخْسَئُوا﴾ فِي اللُّغَةِ: تَبَاعَدُوا، وَيُقَالُ: خَسَأْتُ الْكَلْبَ أَخْسَؤُهُ؛ إِذَا زَجَرْتُهُ لِيَتَبَاعَدَ.
