said: 'Amma ba'd (as for what follows); this Quran was revealed to the Messenger of Allah, and we used to recite: "Do not turn away from your fathers, for it is disbelief," as well as the verse of stoning. I feared that there might come a people who say: "We find no stoning [in the Quran]," even though the Messenger of Allah stoned [adulterers] and we stoned after him. By Allah, were it not for the fact that people would say that 'Umar has added to the Book of Allah, I would have recorded it, for it was revealed and we wrote it down.' Regarding [the verse]: "And let not pity for them withhold you in the religion of Allah"—meaning in the ruling of Allah. Qatada said: It means that the severe flogging should be administered.

Yahya [narrated] from al-Khadr ibn Murra, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: "I have committed a transgression requiring a hadd punishment, so execute it upon me!" He called for a whip, and a harsh whip was brought to him. He said: "[Bring me] a whip less harsh than this." Then a whip with a broken tip was brought, so he said: "[Bring me one] better than this."
