And "tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision" from that which is not lawful for them to gaze upon, "and guard their private parts" from that which is not lawful for them; this applies to both free women and slave women. "And not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof"; this applies to free women. The interpretation of Ibn Abbas and Qatada regarding "that which [necessarily] appears thereof" is that it refers to kohl and the ring. The interpretation of Ibn Mas'ud and al-Hasan is that it refers to the outer garments. Yahya said: This pertains to free women, whereas regarding slave women, Sa'id and Uthman have narrated to us, from

﴿وَقُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ﴾ عَمَّا لَا يَحِلُّ لَهُنَّ مِنَ النّظر ﴿ويحفظن فروجهن﴾ مِمَّا لَا يَحِلُّ لَهُنَّ وَهَذَا فِي الْأَحْرَار والمماليك (ل ٢٣٣) ﴿وَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلا مَا ظهر مِنْهَا﴾ وَهَذَا فِي الْحَرَائِرِ. تَفْسِيرُ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَقَتَادَةَ: مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا: هُوَ الْكُحْلُ وَالْخَاتَمُ. وَتَفْسِيرُ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ وَالْحَسَنُ: هِيَ الثِّيَابُ.
