Qatada, from Anas ibn Malik, "that Umar ibn al-Khattab saw a slave woman wearing a head covering (qina'), so he struck her with the whip"—in the hadith of Sa'id. Uthman said: "He reached for her with the whip and said: 'Uncover your head. Do not imitate the free women.'"
"And let them draw their head coverings (khumur) over their chests (juyubihinna)": she lets the head covering hang over her neckline, concealing her chest with it. "And not expose their adornment": this refers to the hidden adornment, "except to their husbands": meaning their spouses, up to His saying: "or their women": meaning the Muslim women who may see of her what a mahram (unmarriageable kin) sees, whereas the Jewish, Christian, or Magian woman may not see that from her. "Or what their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire": meaning the need for women. The interpretation of Qatada is that he is the foolish man whom a woman does not desire, and about whom a man has no jealousy.
Muhammad said: Whoever reads (ghayri) in the genitive case (al-khafd), it is because it is an adjective for the 'attendants'.
