{Say: Obey Allah and obey the Messenger}, meaning: the hypocrites. Then He said: {But if you turn away}, meaning: if you turn away from both of them, {then upon him}, meaning: the Messenger, {is only that which he is burdened with} of conveying [the message], {and upon you is that which you are burdened with} of obeying him. {And if you obey him}, meaning: the Prophet, peace be upon him, {you will be guided; and there is not upon the Messenger except the clear conveyance}, like His saying: {And We have not made you a guardian over them}, [meaning] to record their deeds for them so that you may recompense them for them.
