"And those who do not invoke"—meaning: do not worship—"with Allah another deity." Al-Hasan said: A group feared that they would be held accountable for what they had done during the pre-Islamic period [Jahiliyya], so they came to the Messenger of Allah, mentioned their immoral acts, and said: "We have killed and committed [sins]." Consequently, Allah revealed: "And those who do not invoke"—meaning: do not worship—"with Allah another deity, nor do they kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right," meaning:
﴿وَالَّذين لَا يدعونَ﴾ أَيْ: لَا يَعْبُدُونَ ﴿مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخر﴾ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: خَافَ قَوْمٌ أَنْ يُؤْخَذُوا بِمَا عَمِلُوا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ؛ فَأَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَذَكَرُوا الْفَوَاحِشَ، وَقَالُوا: قَدْ قَتَلْنَا وَفَعَلْنَا؛ فَأَنْزَلَ الله ﴿وَالَّذين لَا يدعونَ﴾ أَيْ: لَا يَعْبُدُونَ ﴿مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلا بِالْحَقِّ﴾ يَعْنِي:
